1994: R. Kelly marries Aaliyah using fake certificate
Kelly met Aaliyah Haughton in 1991 when she was 12 years old. When she was 15, they got married using a false marriage license that claimed she was 18. The marriage was later annulled in Detroit.
1996: Lawsuit filed against Kelly for sex with minors
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Tiffany Hawkins filed a lawsuit against Kelly in 1996, saying that he began having sex with her when she was 15 and that the relationship lasted until she was 18. The suit was settled later, with Hawkins getting $250,000 in damages.
2001-2002: Kelly is sued by a woman who claims he impregnated her
In 2002, Patrice Jones filed another lawsuit against Kelly, saying that he impregnated her and then forced her to get an abortion, according to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jim DeRogatis. Around the same time, in 2001, Tracy Sampson also filed a lawsuit, saying he had sex with her when she was 17.
2001-2002: Sex tapes leaked to Chicago Sun-Times
In 2001, the first sex tape was sent to the newspaper, and was then sent to police. In 2002, a second tape surfaced, according to the Sun-Times, and led to Kelly’s indictment on 21 felony charges of sex with a minor and child pornography that were later reduced to 14 counts. He was acquitted on all counts in 2008 when the girl in the tape wouldn’t testify.
2005: Kelly’s wife said he hit her when she wanted a divorce
Kelly’s wife Andrea Lee said that he hit her when she wanted to get divorced, though in 2007, she defended him against his charges. They divorced in 2009.
